How to Recover a Power BI Workspace

At times users can accidentally delete Power BI Workspaces which deletes both the workspace and all of the contents within the workspace. Fortunately, workspaces can be restored and recovered within 30 days of deletion by a Power BI Admin.

What is a Power BI Workspace?

Power BI workspaces are collaborative areas within PowerBI.com where users can publish reports, dashboards, and semantic models They can further be shared with other users or other groups. They’re a way to logically separate Power BI files within the Power BI service. While we recommend deleting unused workspaces in Power BI there are times when they can be inadvertently deleted, causing the need to be recovered.

How to Recover a Deleted Power BI Workspace

Power BI Admins can restore a workspace and its contents if it was unintentionally deleted within 30 days of the initial deletion request. To Restore a Workspace in Power BI, navigate to the settings icon at the top right of the Power BI service, and select Admin Portal. Navigate to Workspaces, and any deleted workspace can be restored under the … button and select Restore.

After selecting to restore a workspace an admin has to be assigned to the new workspace. After assigning an admin, you can also rename the workspace and assign additional users with different roles.

The new users will have access to the workspace, and all contents within it.

Restoring and recovering Power BI workspaces requires that the workspace be assigned a new administrator

Once restored, it will look like the workspace was never deleted. Users may need to log out and log back into the Power BI service to see the newly restored workspace.
