Getting Started with Notion
After creating a Notion account, you’ll be taken to the Getting Started page. The screenshot below shows the standard view when signing up for a personal account. If you’ve ever used tools like Microsoft OneNote or WordPress the interface will be somewhat familiar. Don’t worry if you’re completely new to it because it’s very easy to learn and only takes a few minutes to get the basics down.
The page on the right side is an area where you can write free-form text, copy and paste images, insert videos or take any other notes that you need.
Within the interface on the right side, there are 3 features that we want to make sure that you’re aware of.
- Type ” / ” for formatting options
- Type ” Space ” for AI Features
- Explore Notion Templates
Here’s a quick breakdown of each.
Adjusting Notion Formatting with Blocks
Notion utilizes the concept of blocks to create different style elements. Blocks are widely used in the WordPress blogging software and are really easy to use once you get the hang of it. The idea is that you can create stand alone elements within a page, like tabs or to-do lists and then move them around as a single object instead of having to mess around with moving individual rows, or multiple chunks of text. New blocks are inserted by typing ” / “
Get More Done with Notion AI
AI tools like ChatGPT are nothing short of amazing, but they typically operate in a bubble. Notion lets you use AI directly in a workspace where you can use it to summarize notes, perform translations, expand on terms you’re not familiar with or even use it to write e-mail responses, blog articles, whatever it might be. By using AI to complete tasks for you, it saves you a lot of a time and effort which boosts your productivity.
We’ve found that even without using AI to fully complete a task it can reduce your cognitive load so you’re spending less brain power on things that don’t really matter helping you stay fresh and focused throughout the day.
Leverage Pre-Made Templates
With so many different features available it can be difficult to figure out which ones to use and where to start. Luckily, Notion has tons of pre-made templates available that give you a starting point to organize a lot of common tasks. There is everything from simple to-do lists to more niche templates for computer engineers to write API documentation.
To brows the available templates, navigate to the bottom of the options panel on the left side of the Notion interface, and select Templates.
These are just a few of our favorite features within Notion and barely scratches the surface of what the platform is capable of. The best way to learn Notion and see its capabilities is to sign up for an account and give a test drive.
Conclusion
Notion is one of the best task management and productivity tools available on the market today. It offers a unique blend of comprehensive features and a clean simple to user interface. Because of the clean interface it’s deceptively powerful because there aren’t tons of buttons and features popping up at you at any given point.
Advanced functionality like inserting pre-formatted blocks, starting with pre-made templates for almost any use case, and leverage AI with the press of a keyboard button lets you quickly make adjustments to your workspace without putting much thought into it.
While other tools have a steep learning curve, Notion can start helping you stay organized and complete tasks in a way that boosts productivity well beyond your traditional to do list and task management solutions.
